Replacing the Pahlavi in 1979 following the Iranian Revolution. Pre-1989 the coins feature an interesting geometric design on one side and a mosque design on the other. Later coins feature Ayatolla Ruhollah Khomeini and a similar mosque design. These coins are the same size and purity as the Pahlavi that they replaced.
